The move at Gucci to #nofur will do well with its younger client base attracted to their styles this year. The Millennials look to sustainably made products for fashion. We believe everyone should be concerned with the practices and procedures on how fashion manufactures source and make their products.
But buyer beware. “Thomas Salomon, general manager of Yves Salomon working with fashion house Christian Dior says “Fake fur is the least ecological product, which is done with plastic and non-renewable materials,”
Fake fur is known as pile fabrics. They can be made into many colors and some are even machine or hand washable. These bulk fibers are composed of blends such of acrylic polymers. One chemical included is petroleum.
Bulk fibers are typically composed of polymers, including acrylics, modacrylics, or appropriate blends of these polymers. Acrylic polymers are made from chemicals derived from coal, air, water, petroleum, and limestone. They are the result of a chemical reaction of an acrylonitrile monomer under conditions of elevated pressure and heat.
In 2010, President Barack Obama signed “The Truth in Fur Labeling Act” into law which restricts the sale of products containing real fur if they are not accompanied by truthful labeling.
Throughout the year’s many manufacturers have sold real fur as fake fur. Around the year 2015, The Humane Society of the United States accused Neiman Marcus of violating an agreement not to sell “faux fur” products containing actual animal fur. The complaint was filed with the Federal Trade Commission. In 2010 Neiman Marcus was also accused of deceptive advertising of faux fur and hairs of rabbit, raccoons dogs and coyotes were found in the advertised products. Since then, the items have been removed from all store shelves.
What are your thoughts about faux furs? Do you love them or hate them?
Do you believe they still falsely give off the impression that we want to still kill animals for the look of luxury, whether the practices are sustainable or not?
