The Little Black Dress- How to Wear it This Spring

As we know it, the little black dress in our closet is always our “go to” for the perfect thing to wear for a date, an evening event, or a formal business affair.

Our obsession with this dark elegant color we call black has a bit of history.  The color black represented romance and artistry in the 18th century. While symbolically black represents darkness, in the fashion world, it represents mystique, class and wealth.

Coco Chanel

In 1926 Gabrielle Coco Chanel published a photo of a  black dress in the American version of Vogue Magazine. Women all over took notice. The photo symbolized the death of the morbid black tone, and the color rose into the fashion statement that the black dress was chic and high- class.

Audrey Hepburn

In 1961 Audrey Hepburn wore a sheath little black dress in her starring role in the movie ” Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”  The original dress designed by Givenchy deemed not to be suitable for the movie because it showed too much leg. The lower half of the dress was later designed by Edith Head.

Edith Head is an award-winning costume designer winning a record number of eight Academy Awards for best costume design.

The little black dress has evolved over the years. It is not just for evenings out on the town but makes its way into the boardroom for executive women. It wears well in the office under a grey jacket to soften the look. It works well when wearing a boho style mid-length black dress such as the dresses designed by Free People. Free People has some amazing casual black dresses perfect for spring and summer.

Black is perfect at the office when you mix it up with some pattern and color.
